Getting Started

It Begins Here!
It Begins Here!

Let’s Get Started!

Here are some tips for getting started in starting, building and maintaining your ministry in social media.

-

First- consider which social media platform to use. Our recommendation would be to consider both Twitter and Facebook.  Start first with Twitter.  It is much easier to build a good sized Christian Following Base (CFB) on Twitter.  We will explain this more in detail in our forth coming "CAN Tips."

-

We strongly reconmend working with Twitter for atleast 18-24 months and then (should you like) promote your new Facebook ministry to your Christian followers.  Those who also have a Facebook will gladly follow you over to Facebook.

-

Twitter is more of a broadcast form on social media. Users send out their tweets (we call “edifications”) and people can reply to you if your tweet provoke a thought they wanted to share with you.  Because of the way Twitter is set up, users (we call “Saints”) may not necessarily see each other's replies to your original tweet.  No problem!  We only want to make sure they see yours.

-

Remember, the average person on Twitter has about 209 followers.  You will find that their followers are Christians also.  Thats very important.  You can also follow their "Following Base" as well.  Many will in turn follow you.  This is a great way to help build your Christian Following Base (CFB).  But the best way is yet to come!

-

On the other hand, Facebook is a bit more of a community-oriented conversation in that Saints can see each other's comments in what is called a thread, (that’s short for a comment thread), underneath the original post.  Facebook acts more like a mini-blog.  Some of the comments can become very long.  This can turn some readers off.  We will have some future tips on our "CAN Tips."  We will also send these tips to those of you who join us in this wonderful ministry.

-

There are countless of other social media platforms as well (e.g., Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Google+), but the two main platforms are Twitter and Facebook.

-

Use the Same Tool We Use!  Remember, "The Great Commission" says "Go unto all nations and teach them to observe the things I have shown you."  See Matthew 28:18-20.  If the Holy Spirit has spoken to you to perform this work, then you are blessed to be one of those whom the Lord spoke to more than 2,000 years ago.  Who would have thought that such a way (as the Internet) would have come into being and we would be able to perform this work with people all over the world?

-

Now lets get realistic!  No one can expect to be sitting at their laptop or mobile device 24-hours per day - sending out tweets (inspirational messages) we call "Edifications" to encourage the Body of Christ.  You need to automate your work and duplicate it 24-hours per/day, seven days per/week and 365 days per/year.  Futhermore, you ministry must continue even if you are sick or on holiday.

-

Use the same tool we use - Social Oomph have been using now for 6 years to get our inspirational messages out to Saint worldwide.  It one of the best management tools on the Internet and we also base our "CAN Tips" on this systerm for training and new ideas for you to consider using.  As soon as you have sign up with this social media management tool, simply send us an enote (email) stating that you have done so - and we will send you 2,000 (plus) inspirational messages (FREE!) to help you get started with your online ministry.

What is a Ministry?

"A ministry is a conscious deliberate act; one performs for the Gospel sake, with passion, that is done persistently and consistently(Rev., Dr. J.R. Hughes, D.D. - 2002 & Founder of Christian Associates Network)"  When I wrote that statement some 15-years ago, I had no idea that the Lord was programing my mind to be about a fulfilling ministry to come some 9-years later.  Still, it is on this format that we design our ministry.  For the Scirpture says: "A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps." (Proverbs 16:9 KJV)  As you begin your Good Work, don't worry about the way you are going.  The LORD will guide you in the way of His purpose.

-

Develop Your Ministry Vision

Now that you have started building your Christian Following Base (CFB), stay in prayer.  Ask the Lord to show you how to communicate your Gift to your ever-growing CFB.  There is no hurry in this or a time limit for you to set. The Lord may just want you to continue edifying the Body of Christ with your inspirational messages of encouragement to His Children.  (See Eph 4:11-12)  That's what we did.

-

Our vision to help others to build their online ministries did not come until 4-years after we started.  And when we did, the Lord had already provided us with an audience that numered in the thousands.  We had no idea the Lord were preparing us to be a blessing in His Harvest - which is truly plentifull.  Remember, new Christians are coming online every day and the number is staggering!  We were amazed and surprised to find that there are millions of Christians online looking for meaningful teaching, advice, ideals, prayers and other Christians to follow.  Can you imagine engaging in such an outreach ministry as this?  If you havn't already, click here to see and review Social Oomph

Getting Started on Twitter

If you already have a personal Twitter account - set up a separate Twitter account for you and your online ministry. Treat your ministry account as a stand-alone entity.  We also strongly suggest opening a separate Email or Gmail which will serve later for all or most of your social media associated accounts in the future.   Be sure to give some thought to your ministry-name to include in your new Email or Gmail. (Keep it short & simple)  Most of you are coming in from Twitter already – so you know the basics of starting a Twitter account.  It was very easy!

-

However, if you need a refresher or new to Twitter - here is a step-by-step guide for how to set up a personal Twitter account

  1. From an Internet connected device (even a Smart Phone, Pad, Tablet) go to https://twitter.com
  2. Choose the New to Twitter? Sign Up box on the screen.
  3. Enter the new name and email/Gmail address. (You will need to access this email address during signup.)  This is why we said to set up a new email account.  If you didn’t you can always change you email address later.
  4. Twitter will help you find a valid Full Name and Username - if you don’t have a name yet. The Username is the one associated with the "@" symbol. Our is @can2009. Sometimes you'll need to add a number or underscore "_" to your username for it to be unique.
  5. Follow the step-by-step instructions provided by Twitter. Don't forget to upload a clear photo of yourself to start – but strongly consider another image or symbol for later.  Remember, your ministry is not about promoting you.  We promote the Gospel of Christ Jesus.  And That's A Good Thing!

If you have a long ministry name - you will need to abbreviate or modify it to find a workable username. Usernames are limited to only 15 characters.  If your ministry is Frontline Compelling Terrific Brotherhood Grand Ecclesiastical Way, you might need to get really creative!  For example, our ministry name is Christian Associates Network which was thought of in 2009, but our Twitter handle is @can2009.  Now let’s look at your profile statement:

-

This is where you can identify your unique purpose and create a mission statement for your Christian followers.  Record your mission statement and make it short, friendly and welcoming to everyone!  Look at ours on Twitter.  You only have 160 characters available to use.  Make sure you leave enough space to include: (Assoc. of @can2009) This little tagline will give your new ministry site credibility.  We give you permission to place this tag in your profile once you enroll with us.

-

The next obvious questions are, how often should I tweet and what should I tweet about?  This is where we come in to help you in a BIG WAY!  Read our next commentary titled: The System   Also be sure to click on our button “Join Us” and leave us a short note or comment about why you want an online ministry.  This will also enroll you with us at the same time.  Stating your “Why” will help you to focus on your vision in building a good and effective online ministry in Social Media.

-

Feel free to ask questions or for clarifications as needed. I will update this article periodically to address some of your questions.  Congratulations—you’re almost there!  The next step is figuring out your engagement strategy.  We will answer this in our next piece titled: The System
